Hartford HealthCare and K Health Debut PatientGPT, Extending AI Triage Into the Health-System Front End

Hartford HealthCare and K Health have launched PatientGPT, a new AI tool aimed at helping patients find health information. The partnership points to a growing model in which health systems use AI not only inside clinical operations, but also to capture and guide patient demand before an appointment is scheduled.

Hartford HealthCare’s partnership with K Health on PatientGPT underscores a crucial shift in provider strategy: AI is increasingly being deployed at the very start of the patient journey. Rather than limiting automation to documentation, coding or in-basket support, health systems are experimenting with tools that help patients interpret symptoms, find information and determine where to seek care.

This matters because the front end of care has historically been fragmented between search engines, symptom checkers, urgent care websites and call centers. By offering an AI tool under a health-system brand, providers are trying to create a more controlled pathway from question to service line. That could improve access, but it also gives systems a new mechanism to shape referral patterns and patient acquisition.

The challenge is calibration. Tools like PatientGPT live in a sensitive zone between education and medical guidance. If they are too generic, they add little value beyond existing internet search. If they appear too clinically authoritative without sufficient safeguards, they raise concerns about safety, liability and patient misunderstanding. The real test will be how effectively the system hands off to clinicians and formal care pathways.

More broadly, PatientGPT reflects a convergence between digital front-door strategy and generative AI. Health systems are recognizing that consumer expectations are being reset by conversational interfaces. The winners may not be those with the flashiest chatbot, but those that can connect AI interactions to scheduling, triage, records and clinician oversight in a way that feels seamless and trustworthy.
